Gold Lockets: Another Traditional Holiday Gift
Most of the time, locket jewelry is produced in gold. 14kt yellow gold and 14 kt white gold lockets are very common. You can also get an 18kt yellow gold pendant, although we usually do not stock them in our store. Most gold lockets have a hinge and can hold 2 photographs on the inside on either site of the locket. Although not widely known, you can also get lockets with inside frames to hold additional photos. Those types of lockets are good gifts to give grandparents when you include the photos of all the grandchildren on the inside.
As a representation of family, some parents and grandparents will wear several small lockets on the same necklace, one to represent each new child, and they will even put a lock of hair in it along with the photo.
Lockets come in many shapes and size. The smallest are given as gifts to babies and the styles vary greatly from antique to contemporary. You will see many with a classic polished finish, others will have engraved designs. You will often times see gold lockets with engraved designed covering the entire body of the locket, other designs will only have engraved edges allowing you add a monogram to the front of the locket. When engraving initials for young girls, we suggest only engraving the first initial. This allows them to wear the locket throughout their lifetime even if they choose to change their last name when they marry.
Very traditional lockets are of course shaped likes hearts, but then you have oval lockets, round and even a book style locket that indeed looks like a small ornately decorated book. A truly classy locket may also include a diamond set in the center.
