Tanzanite, December's birthstone, is famous for its trichoism. Trichoism is when a gem displays three different colors when viewed at three different angles. This breathtaking stone displays royal blues, deep purples, and rich burgundies. These royal colors are associated with warm family gatherings during this holiday season and therefore, the perfect stone for December.
Tanzanite was first discovered about forty years in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, in the East African country of Tanzania. It occurs naturally as reddish brown and must be artificially heated to bring out its signature trichoism.
The original name for tanzanite was blue zoisite. Tiffany & Co, the first to sell tanzanite in America, didn't like the name. The legendary jewelry company was afraid it sounded too much like “blue suicide” and therefore the gem, although gorgeous, wouldn't sell well. Tiffany & Co decided to use the name of the country it was found in as the basis for the gem's name and renamed it Tanzanite.
Tanzanite is easily set and make striking tanzanite pendants and tanzanite rings, among other tanzanite jewelery. Tanzanite's warm and inviting holiday hues makes tanzanite jewelry the perfect birthday gift for that loved one born in December or as a holiday gift for any loved one.
